Modern American Canasta is a game that always features 4 players. There are two teams and team members are seated one in front of the other. In order to win teams need to reach the target score of 8500 points. You will play this canasta variation with 2 card decks and 4 extra jokers.

Every single player will be dealt 13 cards and the rest of the cards are placed in the middle of the playing table, faced down. This will be the draw pile. Two extra packets, one of 3 cards and one of 4 cards are also to be placed in a similar fashion on the table. These are bonus cards. There will be no discard pile when the game begins.

All natural meld cards have to include a minimum of 3 cards and must be of maximum 7 cards. You can use wild cards but you are only allowed to use 2 in one meld. All canasta will contain a minimum of 5 natural cards. All melds have to be made out of a minimum of 2 cards that are natural.

When sevens are used the use of wild cards is not allowed. Also, players will receive bonuses for all melds made out of sevens. Also, if they start to complete such a meld and they do not succeed they will receive a penalty. Aces melds will only include wild cards if we are in front of the first meld that is done by one team. Also, one team will never be allowed to have 2 melds of the same ranks.

A turn will start by drawing one card from a draw pile or all cards from a discard pile. Every turn will end with one card being placed on the appropriate discard pile. Players are only allowed to take cards from discard piles when they have a natural cards pair that is of the exact same rank as the first card in the discard pile. Players are forced to show the pair and meld it by using that top card. Also, you will never be allowed to go out of the game unless the team managed to complete 2 canasta. The last card needs to be discarded in order to go out. Other rules might appear in different locations but these are the most common ones you need to be aware of.
